We had a brilliant idea ...

What if we could offer an aluminium framed gravel bike, at a competitive price, using UK sourced alloy and actually manufactured here in the UK? We are always looking for ways to improve our carbon footprint and to make bikes that are more accessible. We love gravel bikes and we know a heck of a lot about them. Clearly, this project had to happen.

Why aluminium?

After a few thoughts back and forth the answer was obvious; aluminium offers lightness and strength in a more affordable package than carbon fibre. We knew that there was a new grade of alloy available that shared more ride characteristics with titanium than the sometimes harsh rides of the current crop of aluminium machines and crucially, has much better end of life recycle availability.

Turning ideas into reality is something we are good at.

Like any great innovation, we reached for the holy trinity - Pencil, paper, brew.

Some things we just had to include: multiple mounting points to appease commuters and bike packers, integrated headset, threaded bottom bracket, loads of clearance for big rubber and, of course, it needed to look uber cool. All good, but can we really make it in the UK? As it happens, yes we can! Our alloy frames will be welded by sophisticated robots right here in England. The technology outstrips anything in the far east and to experience the process is like watching a strange robotic ballet.

We have chosen to use a new aluminium grade: 6082. This supersedes the widely used 6061 and has superior strength and fatigue parameters. Each tube profile is being extruded to our unique design and the raw material is 100% recycled; yesterday's cola can may well become tomorrow's NorthRoad Scout frame. To ensure the right grade is manufactured smelted billet has additional elements, such as manganese, magnesium and silicon, added to create the 6082 alloy. We have designed the frame to use flat mount brake calipers and derailleur cables will be full outer to the mech, thereby ensuring best shifting possible when the going gets tough. Industry standard 12mm thru axles and a tapered head tube are also part of the design. To compliment the lightweight alloy frame the scout will have a carbon fibre fork.

What can you expect?

The Scout will be available in three specifications - SRAM Apex, SRAM Rival  and Shimano GRX 400.

Each batch of NorthRoad Scouts are limited in number and finished in a specific batch-related colour design.

The North Road Scout is available from the end of April 2022 for dispatch within 7-10 days.
